History Graduate Studies
The History Graduate Studies (PPGH) at UNIRIO, created in 2007, offers two levels of graduate degrees (MPhil and PhD) organised in three research programmes: Institutions, Power and Sciences; Culture, Power and Representations; Heritage, Teaching History and Historiography. The programmes are developed in partnership with the Museu de Astronomia e Ciências Afins (MAST), and MPhil and PhD supervision are managed by a staff of 33 research directors whose expertise covers a broad range in Social History. PPGH has already graduated more than two hundred students. PPGH is rated by CAPES at level 6 (Research Excellence) and will extend your subject knowledge beyond the undergraduate level, specialise you in a field of academic study, and enable you to gain a competitive edge in the job market. As an MPhil or PhD student, you will enjoy a stimulating research environment. Many of the research trainng is interdisciplinary and are available for most periods of History, from 500 BCE to the present, and in many geographical regions. In our MPhil and PhD programmes, you will be training on up to date methods, concepts and good practices of research used by historians all over the world. You can study Political, Social, Economic, Religious, Intellectual and Cultural History, Teaching History, and the History of Science. We also welcome postgraduates in any areas of research expertise. The History Graduate Studies programmes’ experience is intended to be fulfilling and intellectually enriching in itself and highly transferable to other walks of life.
